Back In The Day: KAWS
Written by Robert on January 16, 2009 – 1:46 pm -KAWS began his career as a graffiti artist growing up in Jersey City, New Jersey. Later moving to New York City in the 1990s, KAWS started subverting imagery on billboards, bus shelters and phone booth advertisements. These reworked advertisements were at first left alone, lasting for up to several months, but as KAWS’ popularity skyrocketed, the ads became increasingly sought after. In addition to New York, KAWS has done work in Paris, London, Berlin and Tokyo.

Louis Vuitton to Celebrate Sprouse Collection
Written by Robert on January 6, 2009 – 2:28 pm -
Like the artist and designer who inspired the new collection, Louis Vuitton is heading downtown for its new Stephen Sprouse collection.
This week, the company’s boutique on SoHo’s Greene Street will be transformed into a Sprouse destination in time for the collection’s arrival.
“SoHo is a special place for the entire launch of the Sprouse collection,” said Daniel Lalonde, Louis Vuitton North America president and chief executive officer. “It’s in the proximity of where Stephen Sprouse hung out, so we are going to give the entire store a Stephen Sprouse feel. It will have a lot of reminders of Stephen Sprouse. We will be giving it a new identity.”
For instance, the company is wrapping the store in vinyl and spray painting neon graffiti all over the facade. The window display will feature a 6-foot neon light installation in Sprouse’s Rose motif. The store’s interior, enhanced with black brick wall facing, will also be sprayed with the neon graffiti. New York ‘Walk/Don’t Walk’ Chair
Written by Robert on April 19, 2008 – 8:49 am -
Who knew a New York City “Walk/Don’t Walk” sign could function as a chair in your living room? Like some other chairs we’ve seen lately, this one doesn’t look too comfortable, but it’s unquestionably unique. Its stern lit-up admonitions are even controllable by an included remote.
The chair started its life on the streets of New York, and you can have it delivered to you (about three months from now) in its beat-up city-worn state, or they’ll paint it up for you so it looks good as new. Maybe its glazed resin seat isn’t as uncomfortable as it looks, but those light bulbs inside must make it one hot seat. Too bad it costs $3700, especially if it’s stolen. [via DVICE]
