Develop Film in Coffee and Vitamin C

Written by Robert on March 24, 2009 – 12:21 pm -

It turns out that it’s possible to develop film in a mixture of instant coffee, washing soda and vitamin C. This is, to me, amazing. Here’s the recipe.

12 oz. water

5 teaspoons instant coffee crystals

3 1/2 teaspoons washing soda

1/2 teaspoon vitamin C powder

Dubbed cafenol (its a geeky photochem joke), the developer is used just like a regular developing solution, only you can make it by raiding the kitchen cupboard (apart from the instant coffee, of course. We know you all have French presses and espresso machines). You will still need a real fixer solution to deactivate the light sensitive materials, and you’ll need to take the same care in loading the film into a developing tank as you would if using regular ol’ Perceptol, but the results are surprisingly good.

Cafenol will turn any film into a black and white negative, similar in effect to cross processing (developing a slide film in color print film chemicals, for example), and you’ll still want to keep the extractor fan running. Despite the ingredients, this mixture is foul smelling. Photojojo:

Holy frijoles! How can things that smell like coffee, nothing, and nothing combine to smell like grim death?

Also, don’t drink it. One thing about this hack that isn’t surprising is that there is a Flickr group dedicated to cafenol photos. And it goes without saying that if you do try this at home, post your results to the Gadget Lab Flickr pool.

Pro Bono Contractor Status

Written by Robert on February 21, 2009 – 9:23 pm -

There is nothing like helping someone in need. I helped an uncle of mine rebuild the deck on his house for 12 hours today and will be there for at least another Saturday. It was hard labor that is not often seen by these hands because I am usually behind a computer! It was nice to break away and soak in the sun in-between the recent So Cal rainstorms.

Robert Jaso Photography

Written by Robert on August 23, 2008 – 7:00 am -

What do you do after becoming one of France’s highest-paid male models? You become a fashion photographer, of course. Or that’s what Robert Jaso did, anyways, and by looking at the fruits of his work, we think his change of career was a wise choice.

The Slovakia-born Jaso who moved to France with his family at the age of five and fell into the fashion world by accident when he was spotted by a booker This started a successful 10-year stint in front of the cameras. A decade is a quite some time for a model, so when Jaso was looking for a change and something with more longevity, photography seemed like the next obvious step in his career. Having already had such an amazing first-hand look into how the fashion industry works, Jaso then spent several years working on and refining his own signature style that can now be seen in magazines around the world.

Still based in Paris, but being sent to all corners of the globe to work on various campaigns and shoots, he currently spends most of his time working for Italian Vogue.

With a passion for creating stories and a keen interest in all things technical and aesthetic, Jaso creates carefully constructed images that are strong and beautiful with a hint of quirkiness. By Brendan McKnight.

Alan Jaras Light Photography

Written by Robert on August 3, 2008 – 7:00 am -

Alan Jaras is a British artist that has created these awesome photographs using light as the subject. He takes the light’s patterns, which come through a transparent object and captures the images on 35mm film without a lense (he uses the transparent object instead), and gets the light to pass through colored filters. This is what creates the brilliant light effects that resemble cosmic entities.

Shoot from the chest with the Porta2030 camera backpack

Written by Robert on May 17, 2008 – 1:24 pm -

porta2030.jpgEver considered broadcasting your life live on the internet? Yeah, me either. But if you did, you’d need a pretty fancy setup to have a camera rolling and transmitting at all times. Well, that’s just what the Porta2030 is.

The Porta2030 is essentially a small backpack that has a camera on the front, a battery pack, a USB hub, and an SD drive built in. You can sneakily take pictures from your chest with it or link it up to the web to send video and photos out live, if you so desire. Personally, I prefer regular cameras with viewfinders and all that jazz, but that’s just me.

LA Confidential: Yone Solo Photography Exhibit

Written by Robert on May 16, 2008 – 8:46 pm -

LA Confidential: Yone Solo Photography Exhibit Photo

Japanese photographer Yone is set to present his work to the American public this weekend. In some aspects, Yonehara Yasamasa embodies the same characteristics of another popular Western photographer, Terry Richardson with their liberal photographic style and subjects. One of his most recent projects included an extensive pictorial journey with Aki Hoshino on the book Sneaker Lover. With previous campaigns including Casio G-Shock, Staple Design and American Apparel, LA Confidential will add to a growing list of accomplishments. The event thrown by House of Cassette and Mighty Printing will take place Saturday, May 17th. Due to what we assume is ample amounts of alcohol and the mature content on hand, the event is for attendees over the age of 21. More details can be seen below.

LA Confidential: Yone Solo Photography Exhibit
Saturday May 17, 2008
7:00 pm – 12:00 am
Cassette 523
523 North Fairfax Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90036
RSVP: rsvp@houseofcassette.com
