Your First Printing Experience: How to Prepare
Written by Robert on August 25, 2009 – 1:56 pm -
This article assumes that you (the reader) have already started your company, have designs that you would like to print and have found a printer to work with. It is intended to walk you through the process of your first print and bring up any “did you knows”. Enjoy!
- Prepare your files for print.
- Select your printing method.
- PRINT!
PREPARE YOUR FILES FOR PRINT
As a clothing company the first thing you should know is designing for print (4-color process) and designing for t-shirts are two different worlds. Make sure you or your designer make it as easy as possible for your printer to print your shirt without compromising your design. This will not only make it easier for you in the long run but it will give you a better product for your customers because you did not make last minute changes during the process.
As a designer and company owner, I am very familiar with how to make my life and my screen printers life a lot easier. Make sure you convert all of your text to outlines, use pantone colors, create your artwork to size (exactly, not bigger or smaller), use vector artwork when possible and expand all stroked lines to at least 0.5 points.
What do you need to know before talking with your printer?
- Where the print is going.
- How many colors are used.
- The Pantone color codes for all colors used.
- The type of printing method you are using.
- Are you using specialty inks?
- How many units you are printing.
- The type of ink you are using.
Where the print is going. The easiest way I have found to indicate where the print will be is to create a line sheet. This will show if you have multiple print locations and if the designs will go over seams (neck, waist etc.).

Fitted Hawaii “Generations” Pack
Written by Robert on March 26, 2009 – 9:11 am -
To pay tribute to the ones that came before us, Fitted Hawaii has put together the “Generations” pack. The pack consists of a pocket t-shirt and a custom New Era cap, featuring bold embroideries and a satin lining.
“This pocket tee is printed on all black and features a white Hawaiian quilt-esque pattern on the pocket. The back features a Hawaiian proverb which reads “Mai Pale I Ke A ‘O A Ka Makua” (in purple, teal and gray letterings) which translates to “Do Not Set Aside The Teaching Of Your Elders.” Next up is a new custom Fitted cap which features an all over print of a Hawaiian quilted pattern in heavy stitching using whites, teals and purple. There’s also light stitching on the brim, followed with a teal underside. The inside sweatband uses the same proverb as seen on the shirt with a purple satin lining.”
The Fitted Hawaii “Generations” Pack will be released this coming Saturday, March 28th.

CARHARTT x NEW ERA Spring/Spring 2009
Written by Robert on March 26, 2009 – 9:09 am -
I’m still heated that CARHARTT’s streetwear brand extention hasn’t migrated from the UK to the States. Rather than whine about it, while trying to be witty, here is a taste of the fitted styles coming out for their Spring/Summer 2009 collection. The new kid on the block is a the Famous Script New Era 59Fifty. Crispy in Tonal Black. We predict this style will be a repeat offender in multiple color ways. The Logo cap returns in Red, Black, Purple, Silver and of course, Carhartt Brown. Check www.carhartt-streetwear.com for more details.

NEW ERA MLB Brooklyn Dodgers CORK
Written by Robert on March 9, 2009 – 8:16 am -
The beauty of creativity happens when a mind goes above and beyond the status quo. APPLEBUM’s synthetic cork material steps things up several notches. Adding the Brooklyn Dodgers to the equation puts the polish on it. We predict Forces and Dunks will follow.

Featured on Buy-Tees.net
Written by Robert on February 27, 2009 – 10:02 am -
Buy-Tees.net is an online fashion magazine featuring t-shirt reviews and news. Buy-Tees.net has featured our new “Know Your Destination” theme now available at the Envee Apparel Store.
They say that the grass is always greener on the other side, who knows, I only have a small decked terrace with a few potted plants, but I’m guessing the idea that you can always aim higher rings true with many of us. The idea of a better life, a greater existence, a final destination is a concurrent theme throughout Envee Apparel’s line of top quality designer t-shirts. I’ve just received a very enthusiastic email from Robert Hartland to take a look around their rather innovative fashion store and blog, and overall I’m impressed.

Jacket With an Inflatable Hood
Written by Robert on February 25, 2009 – 2:59 pm -Sleeping on a train, plane or car would be a hell of a lot more comfortable if your jacket had a hood that could inflate and function as a pillow.

The jacket, confusingly dubbed “Never Stop a Rolling Stone” by designer Rahel Ritchie features a fully inflatable hood that can be manually adjusted via a mouthpiece tucked away in the fabric. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that this concept is available for sale. However, the snowboarding experts at Burton have had a similar product on the market for a while now. The latter is actually a hoodie and it doesn’t feature a fully inflatable hood—but it does have a built in eye mask and earplugs for lullaby listening.
